Podcast Episode #18 with Sally Morrell from Weston A. Price Foundation

Youtube 15 sep. 2014

In today's podcast I interview the author of Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats, Sally Fallon Morrell. This well-researched, thought-provoking guide to traditional foods contains a startling message: Animal fats and cholesterol are not villains but vital factors in the diet, necessary for normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels.

Ms. Morell’s lifelong interest in the subject of nutrition began in the early 1970s when she read Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price. Called the “Isaac Newton of Nutrition,” Price traveled the world over studying healthy primitive populations and their diets. The unforgettable photographs contained in his book document the beautiful facial structure and superb physiques of isolated groups consuming only whole, natural foods. Price noted that all of these diets contained a source of good quality animal fat, which provided numerous factors necessary for the full expression of our genetic potential and optimum health. Ms. Morell applied the principles of the Price research to the feeding of her own children, and proved for herself that a diet rich in animal fats, and containing the protective factors in old fashioned foodstuffs like cod liver oil, liver and eggs, make for sturdy cheerful children with a high immunity to illness. Ms. Morrell currently serves as the President of the Board for the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Depression, The Microbiome & Leaky Gut

David Perlmutter, M.D.

We now understand that inflammatory markers, the same that we see elevated in heart disease are also elevated in the depressed patient.

So the question is: If depression is an inflammatory disorder then where does the inflammation come from?

~

From inflammation to sickness and depression: when the immune system subjugates the brain

Abstract

In response to a peripheral infection, innate immune cells produce pro-inflammatory cytokines that act on the brain to cause sickness behaviour. When activation of the peripheral immune system continues unabated, such as during systemic infections, cancer or autoimmune diseases, the ensuing immune signalling to the brain can lead to an exacerbation of sickness and the development of symptoms of depression in vulnerable individuals. These phenomena might account for the increased prevalence of clinical depression in physically ill people. Inflammation is therefore an important biological event that might increase the risk of major depressive episodes, much like the more traditional psychosocial factors.

Fructose, Bayes’s Theorem, Hill’s criteria and Murphy’s Law — Richard Feinman, Ph.D. (AHS14)

Youtube 23 aug. 2014

The current interest in fructose provides an opportunity to study metabolism and allows us to ask what clues about ancestral behavior are evident in current pathways. When considering the threat to paleo from the exaggeration in fructose, we have to consider all the other threats from the nutritional literature and there is the opportunity to discuss how we can read that literature. I describe Bradford Hill’s criteria for when an association can be taken as causal as in Hill’s deduction of the link between cigarette smoke and lung cancer. The failure of the current literature to conform to his criteria suggests that the cigarette-cancer link is not only the classic case of effective use of epidemiology but may be the only case. I also describe Bayes’s theorem which points out how statistics is about beliefs and expectation and how each failure of trials of the diet-heart hypothesis should have raised the stakes on the next and, in the end, how foolish meta-analyses are. On the positive side, I offer our previously published matrix method as a good way to present dat in dietary trials. And finally, any thing that can go wrong in nutritional studies, can be shown to be correct anyway with statistics.

Brief overview of the recent, spectacularly successful Low Carb Summit in Cape Town

Youtube 26 feb. 2015

LCHF.
LCHF(Low Carb High Fat) –

  • For years, dieters have believed high-carb, low-fat is the key to weight loss
  • But a body of new evidence is turning the tide and changing the advice
  • Dietitian Dr Trudi Deakin's new book encourages a diet high in saturated fat
  • Eat Fat: Step-by-Step Guide To Low Carb Living is the result of research examining the recent studies on the subject
  • No evidence that saturated fat causes heart attack or stroke, she said
  • Saturated fat leaves you feeling fuller for longer and less inclined to snack
  • High-carb diet promotes production of weight-promoting hormone insulin
  • Excess carbs in the body are converted into fat which sits around organs

AHS12  - A Role for a Paleolithic Diet in the Treatment & Prevention of Cancer

Youtube 13 mars 2015

Rainer Klement, Ph.D. presenting at the 2nd Annual Ancestral Health Symposium (AHS12).Is There a Role for a Paleolithic Lifestyle in the Treatment and Prevention of Cancer?Abstract:Cancer could be considered a disease of civilization that has consistently been reported to be very rare among uncivilized hunter-gatherer societies. This observation makes sense from an evolutionary perspective from which it is reasonable to assume that the lifestyle factors that protect our genome against tumorigenesis have been selected for early in the history of the genus homo when humans lived as hunter-gatherers.In this talk, we are going to address the question whether the implementation of a "paleolithic" lifestyle can have beneficial effects in the prevention as well as the treatment of cancer. Thereby, we are going to focus on the roles played by three important factors: regular sun exposure (leading to sufficient vitamin D levels), physical exercise (leading to sufficient muscle mass, inversely correlated to overall mortality due to its anti-inflammatory effects) and diet. While there is already compelling evidence for the beneficial effects of the former two, the influence of the altered nutritional patterns in the Western diet upon cancer incidence and outcome is less clearly defined. However, based on recent research linking cancer metabolism to diet, we are going to argue that a paleo-oriented, low carbohydrate diet could suppress, or at least delay, the emergence of cancer, and that proliferation of already existing tumor cells could be slowed down.Overall, the paleolithic lifestyle, including resistance training, may offer a reasonable and valuable possibility of protection against cancer.Bio:Rainer Klement, Ph.D., is a medical physicist in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Würzburg, Germany. His research interests focus on tumor metabolism and the effects of ketone bodies on tumor cells in combination with radiotherapy.Together with Ulrike Kämmerer, a leading expert in the field of ketogenic diets as supportive treatment for cancer patients, he has recently published a highly accessed review article entitled Is there a role for carbohydrate restriction in the treatment and prevention of cancer? in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism. As an ambitious triathlete, he has a strong interest in a healthy lifestyle and adopted a paleolithic diet some three years ago.

Remko Kuipers, PharmD, MD, PhD — Paleolithic Nutrition — Facts From the Floor

Youtube 16 mars 2013

Remko Kuipers, Pharm.D., M.D., Ph.D., presenting at the Ancestral Health Symposium 2012 (AHS12)

Paleolithic Nutrition — Facts From the Floor

Abstract:

Purpose: Previous estimations of the macronutrient, micronutrient and fatty acid compositions of our Paleolithic diet need confirmation from the clinical chemical characteristics of traditional populations that still inhabit the East African cradle of humankind.

Method: To estimate e.g. fatty acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and intakes, we collected milk, blood, umbilical cord and adipose tissue samples from several traditional Tanzanian populations, including the hunter-gatherer Hadzabe, the pastoral Maasai and the fishing communities of Chole and Ukerewe.

Results: The milk arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) compositions of some of these tribes exceeded the upper levels of the recommended milk fatty acid compositions that are issued by the various nutritional boards. Conversely, the very high erythrocyte DHA contents in some of these tribes correspond to the lowest incidence of cardiovascular and psychiatric disease, such as observed in observational cohort studies in Western countries. Finally, the 25-hydroxyvitamin D status of 115 nmol/l in these traditional peoples is significantly higher compared to current Western populations, while the amount of dietary vitamin D that needs to be consumed to reach such levels is currently hampered by the upper levels of intake that have been issued by nutritional boards.

We conclude that the composition of diets as well as the clinical chemical characteristics, of traditional East African hunter-gatherer populations might be used for the development of randomized trails that aim at the study of lifestyle, rather than single nutrients, in the prevention of chronic degenerative diseases.

Bio:
Remko S. Kuipers (1980) completed his Pharm.D. and M.D. in 2008 and his Ph.D. in 2012. During his studies he became interested in Evolutionary Medicine and contacted Frits Muskiet. Their collaboration has resulted in over 20 Pubmed registered publications. Kuipers spent over 1.5 years of his PhD in the field in East-Africa.

List of essential oils

Essential oils are volatile and liquid aroma compounds from natural sources, usually plants. Essential oils are not oils in a strict sense, but often share with oils a poor solubility in water.

Annika Dahlquist - Våre matvaners betydning for helse og livskvalitet

Youtube 14 mars 2015

v/ Dr Annika Dahlquist, spesialist i allmennmedisin
