Rodrigo writes:  Disclaimer about this "The Last Voyage of The Karluk", On the PDF below you can read:

"Vilhjalmur Stefansson is a hard man to place.[...] It was the second of Stefansson’s misjudgements about the Arctic. At the beginning of the Canadian Arctic Expedition, his flagship, the Karluk, became caught in the ice. Stefansson’s destination was the area along Canada’s northern coastline. Since ice drifts west in the Arctic, away from his destination, he left the ship and struck off across the Arctic icecap. This was an amazing feat in itself – but it left the Karluk’s crew leaderless. All of them suffered horribly and nearly half of them perished. Stefansson’s decision to leave the Karluk has been debated ever since. It is the subject of at least three books, all of them harshly critical. Stefansson defended the decision as “bold.” Surviving members of the crew criticized his apparent lack of remorse. Stefansson was controversial for other reasons.[...] He did prove that he could live off the land in the Arctic, one of his favorite theories. Hard experience proved that not every traveler could do the same. Stefansson famously championed an all-meat diet. As an experiment, he eschewed all vegetable food. After the year-long test, doctors attending him pronounced him remarkably fit. These and other contrarian notions brought Stefansson notoriety. For much of his life, he was an intellectual celebrity welcomed by lecture audiences and heads of governments and sought after for endorsements of products and ideas."

http://hostfest.com/data/upfiles/media/Stefansson%20article%202013.pdf

Rodrigo writes: After the Karluk became caught in the ice then the situation changed and maybe it was the ship's captain duty to stay with the boat (The Karluk) and not "Stefansson's duty"? They all knew anyway that this was a dangerous enterprise. Later, they are criticising Stefansson because of "famously championed an all-meat diet". Well, some of us can testify about this all-meat (Fat & Protein) diet, and so did even they so, when they wrote "After the year long test, doctors attending him pronounced him remarkably fit.". So, at least they recognized it. However is important to know the fact that Stefansson was both controversial and an intellectual celebrity, famous in his own lifetime.

Annika Dahlqvist - Staten och maten, FreedomFest Stockholm 2012

Youtube 3 mars 2015

AHS12 Ron Rosedale MD —The Deeper Roots of Health and Diet as Told by Our Ancestor's Ancestors

Youtube  29 dec. 2012

Ron Rosedale, M.D. presenting at the 2nd Annual Ancestral Health Symposium (AHS12) on Saturday, 11 August, 2012.

Abstract:
Ancestral science includes paleoanthropology and precedes it by billions of years, and we must not be blind to this. Thus, we need to include science as it pertains to our ancestor's ancestors such as the biology of aging, for paleolithic nutrition to be viewed in the proper context.
For instance, evolution does not select for a long post-reproductive life but rather for reproductive success, and modern people may be the only species ever to seek a long post-reproductive lifespan. Furthermore, we have all been raised and live in a modern society that can lead to the accumulation of damage and disease since even before birth. Therefore, in order to find answers about what best to eat now, we may need to modify a paleo diet to include what the modern science of the ancient biology of aging tells us about what to eat today, for a healthier and longer life tomorrow.
I will talk about some of the key points of this science that are common to all animal life, and that lay the foundation for optimal dietary intake as it pertains to nutrition, disease, and extending the current boundaries of youthful longevity.

Bio:
Ron Rosedale M.D. is an internationally known expert in nutrition, aging, and metabolic medicine. His now famous lectures on insulin nearly 20 years ago foretold of its importance to the chronic diseases and aging. He has done the same for the hormone leptin with his book "The Rosedale Diet".

In this installment of Ask Dr. Mike, Dr. Mike addresses a Facebook fan's question regarding metabolic adaptation to ketogenic diets.

- Ketosis is not weight loss

- Ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis are not the same and should not be confused

Keys to ketogenic success include:

1. increase fat, don't cut calories

2. deplete glycogen stores quickly

3. keep protein in check

4. decrease calories as needed, while keeping fat up

5. give it time!

Frontiers of Science (The trouble with fructose - A Darwinian perspective) by Robert Lustig, MD

Youtube 14 nov. 2014

Lecture November 6, 2014

“Darwin, diet, disease, and dollars: how the sugar in processed foods changed society”

The Western diet is a primary factor in the etiology of metabolic syndrome. This lecture will explain the two phenomena most closely associated with the metabolic syndrome; that is, leptin resistance, which leads to obesity; and insulin resistance, which leads to chronic metabolic disease (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease; and likely cancer and dementia as well). In each case, we will explore the specific relation between dietary sugar and the pathogeneses of these two phenomena, in order to explain how these two processes, which in the past were adaptive, but which in our current dietary environment have become maladaptive. These maladaptations belie our current global pandemic of chronic metabolic disease, which threatens the healthcare budget of every country.

We will also investigate how the food industry has usurped these evolutionary mechanisms for their own purposes, in order to foment continued consumption and our current global health crisis.

Microsoft Research: The Calorie Myth & 6 Reasons Calorie Counting is Crazy with Jonathan Bailor - 2014

Youtube 3 mars 2014

Free Plan & Recipes: http://SANESolution.com
Microsoft Research Listing: http://research.microsoft.com/apps/vi...

What if everything you were told about weight loss was wrong?
When it comes to most things in life, we welcome the latest advances in science: from the convenience of our smart phones to the life-saving technology in our hospitals, scientific advancement allow us to be more efficient, more productive, and lead better, happier lives.

We value science. We celebrate innovation & progress. We seek to be in the know. So why are we following fat loss, eating, & exercise advice from the 50s?

Why haven't we ever questioned the very foundation of every diet, exercise, and weight loss plan—an approach that, not coincidentally, has coincided with decades of escalating and record-breaking levels of obesity and diabetes?

After over 10 years of research and collaboration with some of the top academics, doctors, scientists, and thinkers in the field of health and wellness, Jonathan Bailor has developed a revolutionary new model for weight loss—and lifelong health. In THE CALORIE MYTH, he exposes the fundamental flaw upon which the diet industry has been built: the "eat less + exercise more = weight loss" equation simply doesn't add up.

In this revolutionary book informed by over 1,300 studies and the new science of fat loss, food, and fitness, Bailor shows us how eating more—of the right kinds of foods—and exercising less—but at a higher intensity—is actually the key to burning fat, healing our hormones, boosting metabolism, and creating long-term weight loss. When we eat lots of high-quality foods like whole plants and nutritious proteins, our bodies are able to achieve a natural, healthy weight—automatically.

When we eat even reduced portions of poor-quality "edible products," like refined starches, sugars, and processed foods, we are programming our cells to store our food as fat and hang onto every extra pound.

If calorie math added up, 100 calories of strawberries = 100 calories of soda and according to the quantity of calories we've consumed over the past few decades, we should all weigh over 1,000 pounds. It doesn't seem right—because it's not. While some calories are designed to repair tissue, boost brain power, and fuel metabolism, others work against us. In THE CALORIE MYTH, Bailor gives clear comprehensive guidance on what to eat and why, providing an eating plan, easy recipes, and a simple at-home exercise program.

You don't have to go hungry or spend hours exercising to lose weight, get healthy, and be happy. With the new science of weight loss, slim is simple.

Added sugar is hiding in 74% of packaged foods

We tend to think that added sugar is mainly found in desserts like cookies and cakes, but it's also found in many savory foods, such as bread and pasta sauce. And some foods promoted as "natural" or "healthy" are laden with added sugars, compounding the confusion. In fact, manufacturers add sugar to 74% of packaged foods sold in supermarkets.1 So, even if you skip dessert, you may still be consuming more added sugar than is recommended.

How do I know if I'm eating added sugar?

Added sugar is hiding in foods that many of us consider healthy, like yogurt and energy bars. It is also added to savory foods, such as ketchup, breads, salad dressing and pasta sauce.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires food producers to list all ingredients in their foods. But added sugar comes in many forms – which is why it's so hard to find on the ingredients label.2

There are at least 61 different names for sugar listed on food labels. These include common names, such as sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, as well as barley malt, dextrose, maltose and rice syrup, among others.

While product labels list total sugar content, manufacturers are not required to say whether that total includes added sugar, which makes it difficult to know how much of the total comes from added sugar and how much is naturally occurring in ingredients such as fruit or milk. That makes it very difficult to account for how much added sugar we're consuming.2,3

How much is ok?

Unlike salt and fats that are added to foods, nutrition labels don't provide you with a daily reference value for added sugar.

However, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends no more than 9 teaspoons (38 grams) of added sugar per day for men, and 6 teaspoons (25 grams) per day for women.5 The AHA limits for children vary depending on their age and caloric needs, but range between 3-6 teaspoons (12 - 25 grams) per day.

Even "healthy" foods can be high in sugar

With as many as 11 teaspoons (46.2 grams) of added sugar in some 12-oz. sodas, a single serving exceeds the AHA recommendation for men and is about twice the allowance for women and children. But sugar isn't only in beverages and sweet baked goods. Here are some healthy-looking items you might find in the supermarket that also have high sugar contents:

- One leading brand of yogurt contains 7 teaspoons (29 grams) of sugar per serving.

 - A breakfast bar made with "real fruit" and "whole grains" lists 15 grams of sugar.

 - A single cup of bran cereal with raisins, in a box advertising "no high-fructose corn syrup," contains 20 grams of sugar per serving.

 - A cranberry/pomegranate juice product, also advertising "no high-fructose corn syrup" and "100% Vitamin C," contains 30 grams of added sugar per 8 oz. serving. Some of the sugar is naturally occurring, but some of it has been added.

Changing labels to help consumers

Americans consume 66 pounds of added sugar each year, on average.

Making healthy food decisions requires having complete information on the food label. When sugars are hidden unrecognizably in most packaged foods, it's a difficult choice to make.

To address this, the FDA is considering revising the current label design, including changing the way a serving size is measured and possibly adding a separate line item highlighting the amount of added sugar.4

There is active discussion right now in public health circles about how to make nutrition labels easier to read and the need for clearer recommendations on how much added sugar is safe to consume. Stay tuned to SugarScience.org as we follow this discussion and interpret its impact for consumers.

Deadly Carbohydrates The Lethal Sugar/Cancer Connection- By Stephanie Martinson

oct2014_dctlscc_01.jpg

A new study shows what researchers have suspected for years—consuming carbohydrates dramatically increases the risk for a common type of breast cancer, a kind that is notoriously hard to treat.1

The study, published earlier this year in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, revealed that postmenopausal women treated for breast cancer were:

  • Two times more likely to have recurrence if their carbohydrate intake remained stable or increased after surgery,
  • 70% more likely to have a recurrence if their tumors tested positive for “insulin-like growth factor-1,” or IGF-1 (IGF-1 increases in response to excess carbohydrate intake),
  • Likely to have a 5-fold increase in the risk of recurrence if they had the combination of an IGF-1 receptor-positive tumor plus a stable or increased carbohydrate intake.1

While the study focused on reducing future cancer recurrences, it has tremendous implications for women who have not yet experienced breast cancer, and for that matter, for everyone concerned about preventing cancers in the future.

A powerful way to reduce cancer risk is to get control of your intake of refined carbohydrates, IGF-1, and insulin levels.2 Yet despite the known risks of excess carbohydrate intake (obesity, cancer, and vascular disease), cutting out carbs can be challenging for most people.

This article investigates the connections between carbohydrate intake and breast cancer risk. It then explores recent data showing how consuming and absorbing too many carbohydrates is associated with elevations in IGF-1, which increases the risk of breast cancer recurrence. It concludes with real-world solutions to help mitigate the adverse impact of excessive carbohydrate intake.

The Breast Cancer/Carbohydrate Connection

sep2014_rdfff_02.jpg

There is growing interest among the scientific community in the relationship between carbohydrate consumption and cancer, with a special focus on breast cancer.

Diets high in readily digested carbohydrates (like those found in most processed foods) are associated with increased cancer risks. Women who consume great amounts of foods with a high glycemic index (the rate at which carbohydrates raise blood sugar levels) have a 57% increased risk of breast cancer, while those who eat food with a high glycemic load (a product of the glycemic index and the total available carbohydrate content of a food) have as much as a 153% increase in risk.3

This increased risk has been specifically identified in people who are overweight or obese. Overweight women, for example, are 35% more likely to get breast cancer if they eat a lot of foods with a high glycemic index.4 Asian women whose primary carbohydrate source is white rice are 19% more likely to develop breast cancer with every 100-gram (about 3 ounces) increment in their rice intake per day. But those who eat brown rice, a slower-digesting starch, are 24% less likely to develop breast cancer with every 100-gram increment of rice consumed per day.5 When glucose levels get so high that they enter the diabetic range, breast cancer risk grows to twice that of postmenopausal women with normal sugar levels.6

In addition to increasing the risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women, glycemic load and total carbohydrate consumption are also associated with the worst kinds of breast cancer, namely those lacking receptors for estrogen and progesterone molecules.7 Triple negative breast cancers—in which cancer cells do not contain receptors for estrogen, progesterone, or HER2—cannot be treated with treatments that oppose hormone actions. This leaves patients to suffer through more deadly, and often less effective, treatment options, thereby lowering survival rates substantially.8

On the other hand, the Nurses’ Health Study, a large, women’s health-focused research project, demonstrated that women who followed a diet high in vegetables and low in carbohydrates were 19% less likely to develop estrogen receptor negative breast cancer.9

Carbohydrates And Cancer Risk

There is a deeper problem with high carbohydrate consumption, even when blood sugar levels don’t rise.

High-carbohydrate diets produce chronic elevations of insulin as the body tries to deal with the excess sugar.4 Protein glycation caused by excess glucose also contributes to insulin resistance, raising blood glucose levels and potentially insulin levels as a result.10 Because insulin is a growth factor, elevated insulin levels represent a potential breast cancer threat because it appears to stimulate breast cancer cells to grow and reproduce.11

Studies now reveal another danger—one that goes beyond glycation and insulin levels—which raises a woman’s risk for breast cancer in relation to her carbohydrate intake.

This danger is posed by a growth factor so closely related to insulin that it is called “insulin-like growth factor-1,” or IGF-1. IGF-1 now appears to be a culprit that links high-carbohydrate intake to cancer risks throughout the body, but with special relevance for breast and possibly prostate cancers.1,12

What You Need To Know

oct2014_dctlscc_03.jpg

Carbohydrates And Breast Cancer Risk
  • Americans’ high consumption of carbohydrates puts them at increased risk for many cancers, especially breast cancers.
  • Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and insulin are underlying culprits associated with carbohydrate intake and cancer.
  • IGF-1 promotes rapid cell replication while reducing normal programmed cell death, two major factors associated with cancer development.
  • Studies show a close relationship between carbohydrate consumption, IGF-1, and breast cancer risk.
  • You can reduce your carbohydrate and IGF-1-related cancer risk by selecting appropriate nutraceuticals that reduce carbohydrate breakdown and absorption.
  • If you are one of the many who find it hard to cut down on carbohydrates in your diet, it is time to turn to some of the many natural dietary supplements that may limit your exposure to these cancer risk factors.

Summary

Many people have shifted away from animal proteins and fats toward a more carbohydrate-rich diet in an effort to improve their health and longevity.

Unfortunately, diets high in carbohydrates, especially sugars and refined starch, raise cancer risk. This is, in part, due to higher levels of IGF-1, a growth factor that promotes cell replication and slows programmed cell death—two major components of cancer development.

High levels of IGF-1 are strongly associated with breast cancers, and perhaps others. In addition, tumors promoted by IGF-1 are more likely than other tumors to be resistant to standard hormone treatments, increasing the need for more toxic chemotherapy.

You can help control IGF-1 levels by restricting intake of refined carbohydrates (white starches) and increasing intake of dietary fiber. Many people find these dietary interventions difficult to sustain.

An alternative to these dietary shifts is to use natural supplement formulas that reduce the ability of dietary carbohydrates to reach your bloodstream, thereby lowering blood sugar, improving insulin sensitivity, and potentially reducing the body’s production of cancer-promoting IGF-1.

Several such supplements exist in multi-ingredient formulas, thus providing broad-spectrum blood sugar modulating mechanisms. By choosing an appropriate supplement formula regimen to be taken before carbohydrate- and starch-containing meals, you may reduce cancer risks associated with elevated blood glucose, insulin, and IGF-1.

William Davis MD - Wheat: The UNhealthy Whole Grain

Youtube - Published on Nov 21, 2012

The wheat of today is not the wheat of our mothers or grandmothers. Modern wheat is the product of genetic manipulations that have transformed its properties. Modern wheat is now a 2-foot tall, high-yield semi-dwarf strain, different in both appearance and multiple biochemical features from traditional wheat. Introduction of this new strain of wheat was associated with the appearance of a long list of health problems, along with weight gain and diabetes.

According to Dr. Davis, saying goodbye to all things wheat provides outsized and unexpected health benefits, from weight loss, to relief from acid reflux and bowel urgency, to reversal of diabetes, migraine headaches, and learning disabilities in children.

Dr. William Davis is author of the #1 New york Times bestselling book, Wheat Belly: Lose the wheat, lose the weight and find your path back to health (Rodale, 2011), now debuting internationally in over ten foreign languages. Wheat belly has helped spark a nationwide reconsideration of the conventional advice to "eat more healthy whole grains."

Formerly an interventional cardiologist, he now confines his practice to prevention and reversal of coronary disease in his practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dr. Davis is a graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine, followed by training in internal medicine and cardiology at the Ohio State University Hospitals, and training in interventional cardiology at the Case--Western Reserve Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also founder of the online heart disease prevention educational program, Track your Plaque.

Thomas Seyfried: Cancer: A Metabolic Disease With Metabolic Solutions

Youtube - Published on Mar 2, 2015

Emerging evidence indicates that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease involving disturbances in energy production through respiration and fermentation. Cancer is suppressed following transfer of the nucleus from the tumor cell to cytoplasm of normal cells containing normal mitochondria. These findings indicate that nuclear genetic abnormalities cannot be responsible for cancer despite commonly held beliefs in the cancer field. The genomic instability observed in tumor cells and all other recognized hallmarks of cancer are considered downstream epiphenomena of the initial disturbance of cellular energy metabolism. The disturbances in tumor cell energy metabolism can be linked to abnormalities in the structure and function of the mitochondria. Cancer growth and progression can be managed following a whole-body transition from fermentable metabolites, primarily glucose and glutamine, to respiratory metabolites, primarily ketone bodies. This transition will reduce tumor vascularity and inflammation while enhancing tumor cell death. A novel “press-pulse” therapeutic strategy is in development for the non-toxic metabolic management of cancer. Malignant brain cancer in preclinical models and humans will be used to illustrate general concepts. As each individual is a unique metabolic entity, personalization of metabolic therapy as a broadbased cancer treatment strategy will require fine-tuning to match the therapy to an individual’s unique physiology.

Thomas N. Seyfried received his Ph.D. in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1976. He did his undergraduate work at the University of New England, where he recently received the distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. He also holds a Master’s degree in Genetics from Illinois State University. Thomas Seyfried served with distinction in the United States Army’s First Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War and received numerous medals and commendations. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Neurology at the Yale University School of Medicine and then served on the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Neurology. Other awards and honors have come from such diverse organizations as the American Oil Chemists Society, the National Institutes of Health, The American Society for Neurochemistry, and the Ketogenic Diet Special Interest Group of the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Seyfried previously served as Chair, Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association and presently serves on several editorial boards, including those for Nutrition & Metabolism, Neurochemical Research, the Journal of Lipid Research, and ASN Neuro, where he is a Senior Editor. Dr. Seyfried has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the author of the book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer (Wiley Press).”

Colin Champ: Augmenting Cancer Therapy with Diet

Youtube - Published on Nov 11, 2014

Unknown to many scientists and practicing physicians, there is nearly a century of data revealing the effect of diet on cancer diagnosis and treatment. More recently, preclinical and clinical data have been confirming this effect. Most notably, the potentiation of radiation therapy and chemotherapy via carbohydrate restriction and intermittent fasting is currently being assessed in clinical trials. Some data has even shown that it may reduce side effects of current cancer treatment. The potential metabolic treatment and management of cancer is an exciting new area in the field of oncology. This presentation will discuss the connection between cancer treatment and diet by highlighting both the historical data and Dr. Champ’s research in the field.

Dr. Champ is a board-certified radiation oncologist and assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He researches cancer treatment as well as diet and nutrition and has been invited to lecture on the topic around the country and world. He is one of the few physicians invited to present academic Oncology Grand Rounds as a resident, an honor usually reserved for experts after years or decades in the field. While only a resident, he published over 20 peer-reviewed articles, started a health and fitness website and company, and co-hosted a podcast that was top-ranked in the U.S., England, and Australia. He has been featured in the Boston Globe, The Gupta Guide with Sanjay Gupta, the National Cancer Institute at the National Institute of Health, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology newsletter, to name only a few. During his medical training, he created Cavemandoctor.com in an effort to simplify the complex aspects of evidence-based medicine for the common reader. The website quickly gained nearly three million readers. He is considered an energetic voice in the field of medicine as he adamantly emphasizes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, he practices what he preaches by stressing a healthy diet and lifestyle for both his patients and himself.
